Surgical site infections occurring after hospital discharge.
Although surgical site infections (SSIs) occurring after hospital discharge cause substantial morbidity, their epidemiology is not well understood, and methods for routine postdischarge surveillance have not been validated. Inpatient and outpatient surveillance followed 5572 nonobstetric procedures among members of a health maintenance organization with extensive automated records. Records were...

New preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) showed a 9 percent decrease in patient injuries in hospitals in 2012 compared with a 2010 baseline, and an 8 percent decrease in Medicare fee-for-service 30-day readmissions.2 The data also showed improvement on a range of measures for health care-associated infections (HAIs) and conditions, including for SSIs. HEN...
متن کاملPattern of pathogens and their sensitivity isolated from superficial surgical site infections in a tertiary care hospital.
BACKGROUND Infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in surgical patients. Rapidly emerging nosocomial pathogens and the problem of multi-drug resistance necessitates periodic review of isolation patterns and sensitivity in surgical practice. Surgical site infections (SSI) are defined as an infections that occurs at the incision site within thirty days after surgery. Objectives...
متن کاملCosts of Surgical Site Infections That Appear after Hospital Discharge
Data were collected from surgical patients in the hospital and on 4 occasions postdischarge. The incidence of postdischarge surgical site infection was 8.46%. Strong evidence showed that these infections caused minor additional costs, which contradicts existing literature. We discuss why previous studies might have overstated costs.
متن کاملOperating theatre quality and prevention of surgical site infections
Surgical site infections (SSI) account for 14% to 17% of all hospital-acquired infections and 38% of nosocomial infections in surgical patients. SSI remain a substantial cause of morbidity and death, possibly because of the larger numbers of elderly surgical patients or those with a variety of chronic and immunocompromising conditions, and emergence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. Facto...
